The dimensions of the new iPads are described in detail in an anonymous leak

iPad Pro and iPad Air lines may be the same size

Rumour assessment   馃 Perhaps

All signs point to multiple iPads being released in the first half of 2024, but a new leak details which exactly what customers can expect, at least in terms of size.

There have been several claims that the next iPad Air could come in two sizes, just like the iPad Pro. The new 12.9-inch iPad Air won't have the Mini-LED backlight, but it will otherwise benefit from the larger size.

According to a new leak from an anonymous source who spoke with 9to5Mac, the exact dimensions of the new iPad Pro and iPad Air have become known. The iPad Pro is slightly thinner, and the new larger iPad Air may use the same body as the existing 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The next-generation 11-inch iPad Air will retain the dimensions of the existing model.

Here are the new dimensions:

  • 11-inch iPad Air (current and new): 247.6 x 178.5 x 6.1 mm
  • 11 iPad Pro 1″ (current): 247.6 x 178.5 x 5.9 mm
  • iPad Pro 11″ (new): 249.7 x 177.5 x 5.1 mm
  • 12-inch iPad Pro (current): 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.4 mm
  • 12-inch iPad Pro (new): 281.5 x 215.5 x 5.0 mm
  • 12-inch iPad Air (new): 280.6 x 214.9 x 6.0 mm.

Understanding new dimensions

<褉>It looks like the 12.9-inch iPad Air may use the existing 12.9-inch iPad Pro chassis, while the new iPad Pro models have an entirely new chassis. Apple sometimes redesigns cases, especially when moving to cheaper products.

The 12.9-inch iPad Air is identical in length and width, but is slightly thinner than the iPad Pro by 0.4 mm. This is such a small difference that it could be explained by a rounding error, but it most likely points to a different display technology rather than a different body design, but that won't be known until actual products are in stock.

The updated iPad Pros do not have constantly changing sizes, except that they are about 1 mm thinner.

The 11-inch iPad Pro has become slightly longer by 2.1 mm, lost a little in width by 1 mm and thinner by 0.8 mm. This tweak doesn't make much sense given that Apple is expected to move the selfie camera to the long side, meaning it will likely need more width, not less.

However, the 11-inch iPad Pro has always been slightly less boxy than the larger model, which can be attributed to these specific changes.

Differences in thickness may be due to display technology.

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro's resizing is even more confusing. It increases by 0.9 mm in length and 0.6 mm in width.

It's inexplicable why the 11-inch iPad Pro is losing width while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is gaining width, at least according to this anonymous leak. It seems more likely that the width will have to be increased on both models to accommodate the landscape selfie camera.

We assess this rumor as possible, but unlikely, if only because it is impossible to verify the reliability of an unknown source. It seems possible that these figures may be accurate, but only time will tell.

During the March event, Apple may announce new iPad Pro and iPad Air lines. No Apple event has been announced, but rumors and codes indicate that new products should be announced soon.
