Purchased movies upgraded to 3D by Apple sometimes only play in 2D on Apple Vision Pro if ownership was saved. imported via Movies Anywhere — and there seems to be no fix.
Movies Anywhere aims to end the confusion about which service a user bought which movie from. It presents all the purchased movies under one roof and users can also buy them from the services through Movies Anywhere.
Unfortunately, this idea hit a roadblock with Apple Vision Pro. Apple is focusing on immersive video in Apple Vision Pro, and a key feature is how the company will upgrade purchased movies to 3D.
If a user has ever purchased an HD movie from the Apple TV Store and a 3D version is now available, they receive that 3D version immediately and for free.
Unless they bought it from Apple through Movies Anywhere. In this case, there will be no free upgrade to 3D – — and, according to Reddit users, it is impossible to simply buy the film again.
“I was just told that if I have 3D movies in my library that don't play in 3D. Sorry, no luck,” Reddit user From_the_Future wrote after speaking with Apple support multiple times. “They will remove the “play in 3D” button from here.
It's not clear why there should be problems playing movies purchased through Movies Anywhere, let alone why this problem only affects certain titles. While several people responded to the Reddit thread saying they were having the same problem, no one noticed any connection between the affected titles.
However, precedent for this problem already exists. When Apple upgraded 1080p movies to 4K, a similar problem arose: Not all movies purchased through Movies Anywhere followed suit.
The original post's author and others have found that they can't accept that some movies don't work and simply buy them again directly from Apple. It's unclear whether this is a bug or intentional behavior.
“I am unable to upgrade or purchase the 3D version,” the original poster says. “According to Apple, at this time I will never be able to watch purchased movies in 3D.”
AppleInsider can confirm that buying a movie a second time from Apple is not always possible. If a version is released with new additions, Apple TV will recognize that the user does not have the latest version — but then instead of letting them buy it, they will simply reproduce the version they already have.
The solution to this problem is to buy a new version of the movie in a movie bundle. However, this only works if the movie is available as part of a package.
Apple Vision Pro owners can watch 3D movies through the Apple TV app, with movies coming from a variety of sources including Apple and Disney. In anticipation of the release of Apple Vision Pro, Apple began adding a 3D headset icon to films including:
