Illinois Launches Apple Wallet ID Support This Year

New legislation went into effect in Illinois on Jan. 1 that allows the Secretary of State’s office to issue digital IDs and driver’s licenses for the first time. As part of the program, the state is also partnering with Apple to support IDs in Apple Wallet.

In a press release today, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias confirmed that the state will launch support for IDs in Apple Wallet by the end of the year.

We are excited to begin our work with Apple, a company that shares our commitment to data security, to provide Apple Wallet IDs that will provide convenience and privacy to Illinois residents. This is the first component of a multi-faceted approach to delivering a modern mobile driver license and state ID program that leverages best-in-class technology for Illinoisans.

Once the program launches, Illinois residents will be able to add their IDs to Apple Wallet on their iPhones. The digital IDs are accepted at “select businesses and establishments” and can be used at some TSA checkpoints.

Residents can visit the Illinois Secretary of State’s website to learn more and sign up to receive notifications as digital IDs are developed throughout the year.

Currently, digital IDs in Apple Wallet are available in the following states:

Arizona
California
Georgia
Hawaii
Iowa
Maryland
New Mexico
Ohio
Puerto Rico
Colorado

In addition to Illinois, the following states have also committed to supporting digital IDs in Apple Wallet, but they have not shared specific timelines.
