New data from Counterpoint Research says Apple was the number one smartphone reseller in China both in the latest data for the fourth quarter of 2023 and for the whole of 2023.

Following IDC's report that Apple topped the smartphone sales chart in China, Counterpoint released additional data confirming that the market's long decline appears to have been reversed.

“Smartphone sales in China bottomed out in the fourth quarter of 2023, rising 6.6% YoY, marking the first quarterly YoY growth after 10 consecutive quarters of YoY decline,” it said. research firm. “Huawei's comeback with its own 5G chipsets continued to attract consumers, while Xiaomi and HONOR maintained strong performance with double-digit growth.”

However, despite renewed interest in local smartphone makers, Apple beat them both to take first place. “Apple sales fell 9.0% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, while Huawei sales rose 71.1% thanks to its 5G chipset,” Counterpoint reported.

“Apple took first place with a 17.9% share, followed by vivo (16.9%) and OPPO (16.2%),” the report continued. “YoY, however, smartphone sales in China still declined 1.4% YoY, compared with a 13.9% YoY decline in 2022.”

For 2024, Counterpoint forecasts “low single-digit year-on-year (YoY) growth for the Chinese smartphone market, returning it to growth in five years.”

These numbers for China in 2023 are in line with a 2022 Counterpoint report that said the iPhone 13 was the most popular smartphone in the country that year.
