Mac, iPad mini and major AI announcements won't be featured at Apple iPad event

Although Apple's “Let Loose” event will be dedicated to the iPad, there will be more — And yet there are many devices that Apple will shelve for later.

The new iPad Air and iPad Pro models will arrive on May 7, 2024, and this time Apple has been a little more forthcoming about what to expect. Although, strictly speaking, there was no mention of the iPad, regulatory documents indicate that new models will appear soon — and Apple is highlighting the Apple Pencil.

So it seems inevitable that this event will be dedicated to the iPad, the first update to the lineup since October 2022 for the iPad Pro and March 2022 for the iPad Air. According to Bloomberg, the expected Apple Pencil will replace the high-end 2018 model Apple Pencil (2nd generation).

The report also confirms previous expectations that Apple will announce a new Magic Keyboard for its iPads.

It is noteworthy that there are devices and updates that may be ready but will not be released on May 7th.

It's no surprise that Macs top the list since they aren't typically included in iPad releases. However, the Mac also tends to be the first to receive a new processor, and this time the upcoming M4 is rumored to launch in place of the iPad Pro on May 7th.

However, there is no indication that this event could actually turn into an M4 launch, with iPads and Macs using the new processor.

In addition, users expecting an updated iPad mini will reportedly be disappointed with this event. This is consistent with only four iPad models appearing in the regulatory documents, which are expected to be the iPad Air and iPad Pro in two different sizes each.

The iPad mini was last updated in 2021, that is, even earlier than the iPad Air or iPad Pro. Apple is reportedly working on an updated version, but it won't be released on Let Loose.

Finally, while AirPods seem like a natural complement to the iPad, it is claimed that Apple believes they are more in line with iPhone releases. So while Apple is reportedly working on cheaper AirPods, those won't be released right now either.

Apple is expected to briefly mention artificial intelligence in its 30-minute presentation, mainly for marketing purposes. No major releases or feature demos are expected.

Apple is hosting a “Let Loose” event at 7am. Pacific on Monday, May 7, 2024, which is about three hours earlier than usual. Apple has also moved the start of its “Scary Fast” to a much later time than usual.

Friday's report suggests that the earlier start of “Let Loose” is to ensure the live broadcast suits audiences in China. However, it's possible that Apple has a new PR person who realized that changing the timing of events brings extra attention to launches.

AppleInsider will be covering the Let Loose event as it happens. Users can also watch the live stream online or on Apple devices.
