Apple licenses millions of Shutterstock images to train its artificial intelligence models

Apple has struck a deal to license millions of images from Shutterstock to train its artificial intelligence models.

Other tech companies have struck similar deals with Shutterstock to help develop visual artificial intelligence engines, including Google, Meta and Amazon. News of the Apple deal broke shortly after it was signed in late 2022 and is expected to cost Apple $50 million.

This follows news of previous talks between Apple and various publishers about similar training of an artificial intelligence large language model (LLM) using content from news articles. Conde Nast IAC and NBC are among the major media names believed to be in talks with Apple to license their content.

Apple is expected to make some major announcements at WWDC this June about its efforts to add more artificial intelligence technologies to its operating systems. Although Apple is often perceived as lagging behind its competitors in the area of artificial intelligence integration, Apple has made some innovations of its own.

Over the past year, Apple device users may have noticed slight improvements in Apple's “machine learning” technologies. For example, predictive text has become more adaptable to a user's preferred vocabulary, and Siri has improved its ability to translate common phrases.

There are rumors that the next generation of Apple processors will include significantly more powerful neural mechanisms.

Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Greg Joswiak joked on social media that the next WWDC will be “absolutely incredible,” hinting that the conference will focus heavily on artificial intelligence-type features being added to iOS . 18 and other Apple operating systems.

A big challenge for Apple when using artificial intelligence technologies is maintaining user privacy standards. This is a problem that other big tech companies using artificial intelligence are not interested in. Apple recently announced that it intends to develop LLM programs that can make the most of the technologies built into devices.
