Working on Its Own 5G Modem Could Save MacBook Users go online without the iPhone, with the potential for broader adoption beyond the iPhone and cellular iPad.
The main goal of the multi-year modem project is to replace Qualcomm’s modem with its own design. However, Apple is considering using its modems beyond the product lines that currently have cellular connectivity.
People familiar with the modem efforts told Bloomberg of a modem, codenamed “Sinope,” that would be more tightly integrated with other Apple hardware. That could lead to some obvious benefits, including a thinner iPhone.
However, Apple is said to be exploring whether to add cellular connectivity to its Mac product line. The idea would lead to a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro that would be able to connect to the Internet via a cellular signal built into the device itself.
The idea would mean that a MacBook would be able to connect without having to be tethered to other devices like an iPhone.
It is believed that if Apple does go down this route, it will not happen until 2026. This is because Apple’s second-generation modem will presumably be better suited to delivering the high speeds that a MacBook Pro user will want to use.
However, these concepts go beyond the MacBook lineup. It is also believed that the modem could be included in headsets, such as Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro model. Again, this would eliminate the need for an iPhone to be tethered and allow users to move around while carrying less equipment.
