Apple TV+ has announced The Big Cigar, a new six-episode drama focusing on the escape of Blank Panther leader Huey P. Newton to Cuba.

The first two episodes of The Big Cigar will premiere on May 17, 2024. The series tells what Apple calls “the incredible true story of the meeting of the Hollywood Revolution and the Social Revolution.”

“[This is the wild escapade of Black Panther founder Newton, who escapes from the FBI to Cuba with the help of famed producer Bert Schneider in an incredibly complex plan – including the production of a fake movie – that goes wrong every time. “says Apple. “And somehow it's all true. For the most part.”

The first episode was written by Jim Hecht, screenwriter and creator of Victory Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. The series is hosted by Hecht and Janine Sherman Barrois, whose work dates back to ER.

Andre Holland plays Newton alongside Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, PJ Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordan Christie and Glynn Turman.

Don Cheadle also directed and executive produced the first two episodes. No details about the writers or directors for the rest of the series have been revealed.

“The Big Cigar” is based on in journalist Joshua Bierman's 2012 article of the same name for Playboy magazine.
