Tim Cook says iOS 18.1 adoption rate much higher than iOS 17.1 at the same time in 2023.

Just before his latest earnings call, Tim Cook announced that the first signs of Apple Intelligence’s success were showing up in the increased rate of upgrades.

“Really early stats that only have three days of data,” he told CNBC, “but users are upgrading to iOS 18.1 at twice the rate they upgraded to 17.1 in the year-ago quarter.”

“It’s a combination of 15 being stronger than 14 this year… and 16 being stronger than 15,” he continued. “Plus, keep in mind that the 15 Pro and Pro Max are also running Apple Intelligence.”

So Cook at least suggests that Apple Intelligence is driving both new iPhone 16 users and people stuck on the 2023 Pro models to upgrade.

He didn't provide any further details, and it's unclear whether the adoption growth is global or just in the US. So far, Apple Intelligence has only been released in the US, where it's set to be released on October 28, 2024.

Cook also didn't mention adoption numbers for the Mac. Apple Intelligence was released to macOS Sequoia users in the US on the same day.
