Apple's global iPhone sales fell by more than five million in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, new data shows.

It was reported in March that Apple had cut iPhone orders due to weaker demand in China, but IDC now reports that the slowdown is being seen globally. The research firm also reports that of all the major smartphone makers, Apple had the steepest year-over-year decline.

An IDC study claims that Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones in the first quarter of 2024. That's down 9.6% from the 55.4 million sold in the same quarter in 2023.

For comparison: Samsung shipped 60.1 million phones during this period, which is approximately the same as last year. Samsung ended the quarter with 20.8% market share, up from 22.5% last year, and Apple ended with 17.3% share, up from 20.7% in the first quarter of 2023.

“Although Apple managed to take first place at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully confirmed itself as the leading smartphone vendor in the first quarter,” said Ryan Reith of IDC. “While IDC expects the two companies to maintain their positions at the top end of the market, Huawei's resurgence in China, as well as notable gains from Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus and vivo, will likely force both OEMs to look to areas to expand and diversify.” .

IDC previously noted that Apple's iPhone as a whole continues to gain market share as demand for smartphones has been steadily declining for several years. The company now says that “the smartphone market is emerging from the turbulence of the last two years stronger and changed.”

IDC expects local brands Xiaomi and Transsion to grow, and also notes that Samsung is now “in a generally stronger position than in recent quarters.”

In the first quarter, however, sales tend to favor Samsung over Apple. While Apple releases new iPhones in September to attract holiday season sales, Samsung typically announces its new models in the first quarter.
