Musicians can now easily create dual-layer tracks in Voice Memos and later export the recording to Logic Pro.
Apple on Wednesday released iOS 18.2, a new update that brings even more features to iPhone. While there are many features, Apple decided to highlight one specific new one in the video.
Apple teamed up with Michael Bublé, Carly Pearce, and Greg Wells to show off the new layered Voice Memos feature used to record vocal tracks for their new song, “Maybe This Christmas.” In the behind-the-scenes video, the artists share their inspiration and how they used the iPhone 16 Pro and the Voice Memos app to bring their song to life.
Layered Voice Memos allows iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max users to record a vocal track over an existing instrumental track, all without the need for headphones. Users can hit the record button and sing over the instrumental tracks, and iPhone will create two separate tracks – one instrumental and one vocal.
Users can later import the layered track into production apps like Logic Pro.
Logic Pro also lets artists and producers conveniently send an instrumental music mix as a compressed audio file directly to Voice Memos. This gives them more freedom to record vocal tracks whenever inspiration strikes.
This feature is currently only available on the iPhone 16 Pro series and requires users to be running iOS 18.2. To import layered recordings, users will need Logic Pro for Mac 11.1 with macOS Sequoia 15.2 or Logic Pro for iPad 2.1 with iPadOS 18.2.
