Apple is expected to expand the use of the tetraprism telephoto lens from the Pro Max model of the iPhone 16 to the iPhone 16 Pro.

iPhone 15 Pro Max is the only model in the lineup to feature a tetraprism lens, which helps increase the optical zoom range of the telephoto lens from 3x to 5x. While the iPhone 15 Pro didn't make the cut, the iPhone 16 Pro could join the Pro Max in using this component.

In a report on the smartphone camera lens market published by AppleInsider, Trendforce states that camera feature upgrades continue to drive device upgrades among consumers.

After the good reception of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and its tetraprism telephoto lens, industry sources expect the use of periscope lens modules to increase in response.

As for Apple, Trendforce believes the camera technology will extend from the iPhone 16 Pro Max to the iPhone 16 Pro, making it a feature of the entire Pro series.

This is not the first time that statements about the expansion of tetraprisms have been made. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has repeatedly stated since September that both iPhone 16 Pro models will use the same tetraprism lens, with other reports backing up the rumor.

Apple's use of tetraprism could impact the rest of the market, although cost considerations will force Android smartphone makers to segment their offerings more.

It is expected that cost-effective periscope systems with a fixed focus or single-leaf periscope will be popular among mid-range devices. For high-end modules, expect high-performance internally focused clustering modules or similar sophisticated versions.
