A new rumor suggests Apple will move the camera on the next generation iPad Air to a horizontal position in the center , as is the case with the 2022 iPad.
On Friday, well-known tipster Instant Digital claimed on Weibo that the new iPad Air 6 will not only come in two sizes: a 10.9-inch model and a rumored 12.9-inch model, but the camera will also be moved to horizontal center.
While this is possible, it does present an engineering challenge, namely figuring out the magnetic mount for the Apple Pencil.
Moving the camera to the horizontal center will allow you to make FaceTime and other video calls in landscape mode. It will likely be called the “Ultra-Wide Landscape Camera” and will retain the Center Stage support that the iPad Air 5 has.
In January, renders emerged showing what the 12.9-inch iPad Air could look like, and purported CAD drawings suggest it may not feature many design changes other than the physical size and a new camera bump.
There were previously rumors that up to four iPad Air models could be on the way. However, the source of this report is cagey, saying that some of them may only exist for testing purposes.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple will release two iPad Air models in the first quarter of 2024. The updated models won't feature the mini-LED technology like the iPad Pro counterpart, but will still benefit from using the same spec Oxide backplane.
