A new supply chain report denies Apple is abandoning foldable devices, and instead claims the company is working on a foldable iPad or MacBook with a foldable screen from 2025 or newer.
Rumors about the iPhone Fold have been circulating at least since Samsung began releasing its foldable line. However, there has recently been a wave of new, albeit conflicting, rumors that Apple has two prototypes, might release a foldable iPad instead, or has abandoned the idea altogether.
Digitimes now claims to have supply chain information. According to the report, various design elements are being combined and the device will not be an iPhone.
It is unclear what stage the project is at, but it is understood that it is close to completion. The report states that plans are underway for mass production of the device.
Similarly, when saying that this device will not be an iPhone, it is said that it will be an iPad or MacBook Pro. This doesn't necessarily mean that the rumors of two foldable iPhone prototypes are false, but Digitimes claims that work has not been stopped or disbanded.
Digitimes has a good reputation for its supply chain sourcing — but significantly worse in terms of the conclusions it draws about Apple's plans and schedules. In this case, it is said that the foldable device will not appear until 2025.
This is consistent with a December 2023 report, which also said in part that Samsung had reorganized its business group to better serve Apple's foldable screen needs.
