In its video announcement of the new Mac mini last month, Apple hinted at an “upcoming” version of Final Cut Pro for the Mac. Apple will likely announce the update during its annual Final Cut Pro Creative Summit, which begins this Wednesday. The conference is being co-hosted by Apple, and attendees will be visiting Apple Park on the first day.
Apple has already announced four new features coming to Final Cut Pro for Mac this year:
- In its visionOS 2 press release in June, Apple said the Final Cut Pro for Mac update would add the ability to edit spatial videos recorded with devices like the iPhone 15 Pro models, any iPhone 16 models, or the Canon EOS R7 mirrorless camera with a spatial video lens, which recently became available for pre-order. Spatial videos have 3D depth and can be viewed on Apple's Vision Pro headset.
- In the Mac mini video announcement, Apple said the Final Cut Pro update would allow users to instantly apply AI-generated effects to videos. In the visionOS 2 press release from June, Apple also mentioned the upcoming ability to add “immersive titles and effects” to videos. It seems plausible that the new AI features in Final Cut Pro could have Apple Intelligence branding, but that's not certain.
- In the Mac mini video, Apple also unveiled AI-generated subtitles for videos in Final Cut Pro, eliminating the need for subtitle plugins or other software. The feature has been long-awaited amid the rise of short-form subtitled videos on TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels.
- The image of Final Cut Pro in the Mac mini video showed an unreleased feature called Magnetic Mask. While details about the feature are unknown, it will likely allow users to isolate moving objects in the foreground to remove them, add text behind them, apply color correction, and more. The feature will likely be similar to Final Cut Pro’s mRotoAI MotionVFX plugin and DaVinci Resolve’s Magic Mask feature.
At least some of these features will likely make their way to an updated version of the Final Cut Pro app for iPad. There may also be updates to the Final Cut Pro Compressor and Motion companion apps for Mac and the Final Cut Camera app for iPhone.
Final Cut Pro's upcoming auto-complete feature
Final Cut Pro received its latest feature update to version 10.8 in June. New features included the Enhance Light and Color effect, a Smooth Slo-Mo option for slow-motion visuals, expanded timeline index searching and filtering, and more. It's unclear whether the next Final Cut Pro update will be considered version 10.9 or whether Apple will finally unveil Final Cut Pro 11, which will likely be a major new version with several additional features. In addition to automatically generated subtitles, many Final Cut Pro users were hoping for features like text editing and the ability to open video libraries stored in iCloud.
In the US, Final Cut Pro costs $299.99 on Mac, while the iPad version is a subscription-based app that costs $4.99 per month or $49 per year.
