Apple Music beta tests new Spotify playlist import feature

The latest beta version of Apple Music for Android includes screens prompting users to import their playlists from other services such as Spotify.

Music tracks themselves are not moved between streaming services, unlike moving older iTunes libraries. Instead, it was possible, although a little awkward, to move playlists around.

It appears that Apple is trying a method to help users do this within the Apple Music app rather than through alternative options. It appears to be doing this in collaboration with one of its more successful options, SongShift.

Currently, this feature is only available in the Android version of Apple Music, only in the latest beta version of the app, and apparently only for a select number of users. Not even all beta participants see this feature — and those who exist say that it doesn’t work yet.

So this is hardly a beta test really, it's more like an alpha test that is randomly given to users to gauge interest or reaction.

However, if this feature leaves beta and becomes available to all Apple Music users on Android, it seems inevitable that it will come to iPhone. It's unusual to see a partial alpha test and not see it on iPhone first, but Apple Music Classical did launch on Android before it came to iPad.

Additionally, in 2020, Spotify threatened the SongShift app at the heart of this new feature to revoke access to the service. SongShift has announced that it will remove Spotify transfers from version 5.1.2 of its app. but in version 5.2.3 this feature returned.
