Apple may add some text effects to iMessage in iOS 18

iMessage on iPhone

Apple's changes to iMessage in iOS 18 could introduce new text effects that could include stylized text that could would send to Android users.

iMessage users are familiar with how the app handles certain words in a message. Existing options include keywords such as releasing “Happy Birthday” balloons, as well as other effects that users can send.

With the release of iOS 18, Apple intends to increase the number of ways users can creatively message each other. More is expected, according to a MacRumors report published Friday.

New text effects will allow users to animate individual words in a sentence, a report claims.

Currently in iMessage for iOS 17 there is no option to format text in this way, and the effects are limited to whole-window effects such as fireworks, etc. Although this is not detailed in the post, it seems logical that this can be enhanced by formatting offered by other messaging platforms, such as bold, italic, and underlined text.

In addition to sending more enhanced messages to other iPhone users, there is a possibility that the effects could be used for Android users as well. Apple previously confirmed that RCS would arrive on iOS in 2024, which could allow the effect to spread across platforms.

RCS and other effects aren't the only features that could be coming to iMessage in iOS 18. As part of Apple's artificial intelligence efforts, iMessage can generate images from a user's invitation and then send them to contacts.
