Apple has reportedly developed a chip equivalent to four M2 Ultras for the Apple Car project

The Apple Car never saw the light of day, but recent reports have revealed that the project, known as “Titan” #8221; was canceled after 10 years and billions of dollars spent. Apple had ambitious plans for its electric car, such as creating an advanced autonomous driving system. And to make this a reality, the company has reportedly developed a chip equivalent to four M2 Ultras combined.

Apple Car will have a chip equivalent to four M2 Ultras

Bloomberg’ Mark Gurman said during a Q&A on Monday that the Apple Silicon team was “actively involved” in the project. in the Apple Car project before its closure. According to the journalist, the company has invested a lot of effort in creating the “AI brain.” car equipped with a special Apple Silicon chip.

This new chip will have the power equivalent to four M2 Ultras chips (Apple's most powerful to date). The single M2 Ultra chip contains 134 billion transistors and features a 24-core CPU, up to 76-core GPU, and a dedicated 32-core Neural Engine. The M2 Ultra underpins the current generation of Mac Studio and Mac Pro.

Interestingly, Gurman says development of this new chip for the car is “almost complete”; before the project is closed. Because some of the engineers who worked on the car project were transferred to other Apple teams, the company could reuse the development of this new chip for future projects.

End of the Apple Car Project

Apple has been working on the car project since 2014 under the leadership of Tim Cook. Over the past 10 years, the company has experimented with different ideas and prototypes. A recent report revealed that the company has even tried to negotiate with Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Volkswagen, McLaren and Tesla to create an Apple Car.

However, due to the challenges associated with creating a fully autonomous car, both… Apple executives later revised the project with a less ambitious approach. However, creating a car seemed too difficult for Apple, and last month the company abandoned the Titan project. This project costs Apple approximately $1 billion a year.
