Apple has launched its tap to pay service on iPhone in Egypt and Chile, bringing its reach to 20 countries since its launch This feature arrived in 2022.
Following its launch in the United Arab Emirates, the Tap to Pay feature on iPhone has now also arrived in Chile and Egypt. The latter was confirmed by Egypt Today, which reported that Apple had initially partnered with three major banks in the country.
The launch was also said to be made possible by the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) approving new regulations for payment services using electronic devices and apps in 2023.
Tap to Pay on iPhone means that merchants and customers will eventually be able to hold their iPhones close to each other and initiate a payment. In addition to support from Apple and local banks, it requires a payment app, but that means merchants won’t have to buy separate contactless devices.
At the time of writing, Apple’s own list of countries that support the feature has not yet been updated to include Egypt. However, Chile has just been added.
While Chile, Egypt, and the UAE quickly joined in December 2024, Tap to Pay on iPhone has been slow to roll out. It was first adopted in US Apple Stores in May 2022, before expanding to the UK in 2023 and Japan in May 2024.
