What's new in iOS 18.2 developer beta 3: changes to Apple Intelligence, video playback, and more

iOS 18.2 developer beta 3 introduces improvements to existing features.

The third developer beta of iOS 18.2 is now available for all compatible iPhone models as Apple Intelligence testing continues. Here’s everything you need to know about the update.

Apple released iOS 18.2 developer beta 3 on Monday with build number 22C5131e, an increase from the previous version 22C5125e. While the update is compatible with older devices like the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, the software includes many Apple Intelligence features that only work on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 lineup.

The iOS 18.2 update introduces support for Image Playground, Genmoji, Visual Intelligence, and ChatGPT integration via Siri. There’s also a new FindMy feature that helps users find lost luggage or AirTags.

Monday’s developer beta builds on those changes with a variety of quality-of-life improvements and enhancements, though it also appears to have added some new limitations.

In the third developer beta of iOS 18.2, Apple made some minor changes to the existing Writing Tools features that were added to iOS 18.1 Writing Tools lets users edit, proofread, and tone-correct texts using Apple's generative AI software.

Writing Tools is now accessible from the first section of the context menu, while AirDrop has a slightly different icon.

Monday’s changes to Writing Tools are purely functional. The tools have simply been moved to the first section of the context menu, meaning users can more easily activate Writing Tools whenever text is selected in Notes.

The third developer beta also changes the ChatGPT icon for Writing Tools, which is now black instead of multi-colored. This was likely done to distance OpenAI’s software from Apple Intelligence, so users know that they are still two separate products, even though the companies have an established partnership.

While not related to Apple Intelligence, AirDrop also received a redesigned icon in the Share list. The new icon has slightly thicker stripes but no other notable changes, bearing a strong resemblance to its predecessor.

Continuing with the icon theme, iOS 18.2 developer beta 3 also includes icons that appear to reference an upcoming CarPlay update. The software includes redesigned icons for the CarPlay Climate and Media apps.

New camera control settings, videos no longer zoom in when playing in Photos

The operating system is also making a small change to video playback in the Photos app. Videos no longer automatically zoom in when they start playing.

The third developer beta of iOS 18.2 introduces new camera control settings and a notable change related to video playback in the Photos app.

For camera control, Apple has added a new setting option that allows you to open the Camera app even when the screen is off. Located in Settings > Display & Brightness, there is now an option called Require screen to turn on that is enabled by default.

Disabling this option allows you to activate the Camera app via Camera Control even if the device’s display is currently off. It’s worth noting that the Camera Control button was only introduced in the iPhone 16 lineup, meaning this change won’t affect older devices.

A new Authorized Devices list for Apple Intelligence and other changes

Monday’s developer beta includes a new Authorized Devices list in the operating system code. The list itself appears to be related to Apple Intelligence and contains a list of iPhone, iPad, and Mac models that officially support Apple’s suite of AI features.

While it’s currently unclear why Apple chose to include this list, it could have been added as a deterrent and security measure to prevent users of older devices from accessing Apple Intelligence features in any way.

A new top bar is available in the Apple TV app

On the iPad side, iPadOS 18.2 developer beta 3 brings a noteworthy change to the Apple TV app. The tab bar in the app is now customizable, and you can now add items to it from the sidebar.

At the time of writing, iOS 18.2 is still in the early stages of developer beta testing, with a full public release expected in early December 2024. Separately, Apple also released a firmware update for some AirPods models, including the AirPods Pro 2, which recently received impressive Hearing Health features.
