Bigger and brighter: rumors of a screen change for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro

The iPhone 16 Pro screen may become larger.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to get some display changes. Here's what's believed to be on the way, thanks to the ever-grinding rumor mill.

The display is the primary user interface surface of every smartphone, including the iPhone. The main method of interaction, the display, is a very important component.

Every year Apple updates the iPhone line and makes various changes to the display. With Apple's 2024 update just a few months away, rumors are swirling about what will change.

Many rumors are related to the display.

Here's a look at what presenters and analysts think will happen with the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.

Rumors about the screen size of the iPhone 16 Pro

Size is an important factor for displays on a mobile device, and the same goes for the iPhone 16. This time they will be bigger and better.

Rumors began in May 2023, even before the release of the iPhone 15, and indicated that a larger size was expected. Analyst Ross Young reported that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have screen sizes of 6.2 inches and 6.8 inches, respectively, with these numbers rounded down.

Theoretically, this will be a slight increase for the models compared to the existing 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max.

One of the claims for changing the screen size is apparently to help the Pro and Pro Max variants fit into periscope lens. Adding a large side lens assembly will require some internal design changes, especially in terms of space.

Another report published later that month claimed that Pro models would increase in size by “a couple of dozen inches diagonally.” Other sources in the same month suggested sizes up to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches.

In late September, after the launch of the iPhone 15, rumors resurfaced claiming that the iPhone 16 Pro would have a 6.27-inch screen, while the Pro Max would have a 6.85-inch version.

To accommodate larger screens, Apple could reduce the bezels a bit so that the overall size of the iPhone doesn't increase too much. But this may cause some production problems.

In April, The Elec reported that supply chain participants were having trouble further reducing the faceplate, leading to profitability issues.

A smaller bezel could allow the iPhone 16 Pro to have a larger screen without increasing the overall size of the device.

A month earlier, there were claims that ultra-thin bezels would use Border technology Reduction Structure (BRS). However, there was a problem applying it to the bottom edge.

Heat dissipation problems were supposedly improving, but suppliers still had difficulty getting it right.

Changing the brightness of iPhone 16 Pro

Several leaks have emerged over the year suggesting that the iPhone 16 displays could be much brighter than previous versions.

A September 2023 leak insisted that Apple was exploring Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology. He had previously explored it but had not used it as a display.

This concept can increase the brightness of an OLED screen display by using microlenses that capture light that ends up being directed toward the back rather than reflecting it forward.

One of the problems with this technology is that it reduces the viewing angle of the screen, which Apple could not agree with.

By May, another leak from Setsuna Digital on Weibo claimed that the Pro models would receive support. The typical peak brightness of the iPhone 16 Pro will be 1,200 nits, and the peak HDR brightness will be 1,600 nits.

Compared to the iPhone 14 Pro, this means an increase in typical maximum brightness of 200 nits and the same level of HDR brightness.

At the same time, the source said that Apple will not use the Tandem OLED structure introduced in the 2024 iPad Pro. This system uses two OLED layers instead of one, which increases overall brightness.

Again rumors about Face ID under the screen

Splinter for iPhone users, over the years there have been Apple compromises on a display that doesn't match the TrueDepth camera array that allows Face ID to work. Apple has moved from a terrible mark to the more beloved Dynamic Island, but it may remove it entirely in the future.

Back in February 2023, The Elec reported that the iPhone 16 Pro could feature Face ID under the display, allowing for full-screen display. There were difficulties with launching the camera under the panel, which works through the display specifically for Face ID.

The biggest problem is that it works, but for camera modules with 4 million pixels, it's nowhere near what Apple needs to support its 12-megapixel sensor.

The speculation of an under-display Face ID camera is much older. In April 2022, Ming-Chi Kuo responded to Ross Yang's tweet in which he predicted the iPhone 16 would arrive by 2024.

With just a few months left until release, Apple's display makers were reportedly very close to starting mass production. Elec newspaper reported in May that Apple was preparing to allow its suppliers to start producing screens.

Samsung Display is expected to receive approval by the end of May, LG Display by mid-June, and BOE to follow.

LG and Samsung were expected to produce displays for several models. The report added that BOE makes displays other than the iPhone.
