Consumers may have to wait until 2026 before they can buy the new iPad mini — and it could have a completely new display.

Apple hasn't updated the iPad mini for a long time. However, the update may not appear anytime soon.

According to ZDNet Korea via Naver, Samsung Display has begun developing a new display for the iPad mini. The company has already developed samples, which it reportedly sent to Apple in April.

In addition, the display could receive a major update. These samples are said to have OLED screens, making them equivalent to the iPad Pro lineup.

Samsung plans to begin mass production in the second half of 2025. If true, this could lead to an early 2026 release at best.

Although ZDNet is a reputable publication, ZDNet Korea does not have a track record that we can use to determine whether this is likely or unlikely to happen.

Other regulatory documents were filed in October hinting at the potential release of the iPad mini. Such filings usually mean a launch will happen soon, making multi-year waits unlikely. Add to that the fact that the sixth-generation iPad mini was released in September 2021, and a five-year hiatus seems highly unlikely for a much-loved product.
