New research shows that despite Apple Vision Pro remains too expensive for most users, it will rise, and its existence is already a boost for all headsets.

Mark Zuckerberg may claim that his company's Meta Quest 3 headset is “the best product, period,” but if anything is going to drive sales, it's Apple. According to IDC, the release of Apple's Vision Pro has captured the attention of the entire headset market.

Additionally, Apple is disrupting the headset industry because of how successfully it has introduced what was once a distant third option: the mixed reality device. Before Apple's Vision Pro, headsets tended to either be full virtual reality or overlay some digital elements to create augmented reality.

“Mixed reality (commonly called MR, the ability for users to switch between augmented and virtual reality) has been the exception, not the norm,” says IDC research director Ramon T. Llamas, “but Apple is shining a bright light on MR.” with Vision Pro.”

“Together with Apple, many companies like Meta and others have already started their journey, moving from virtual reality to mixed reality,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager, “in ultimately laying the foundation for true augmented reality experiences.”

IDC reports, that global shipments of AR and VR headsets fell 23.5%. percent compared to 2023. However, the company expects deliveries to rise 44.2% to 9.8 million units by the end of 2024.

The research firm says growth will be driven by unspecified new headsets launching before the end of the year. . IDC expects the number of VR headsets to grow to 24.7 million units by 2028, and AR to 10.9 million units.

IDC predicts that growth will occur as headsets are used to create content rather than simply consume it. The firm says artificial intelligence will also be increasingly used in creating content for headsets.

Additionally, Bloomberg predicts that the Vision Pro will become an iPad-sized market for Apple in the long term. The second and potentially less expensive Apple Vision Pro is not expected until mid-2025.
