A bug in the release version of macOS Sonoma 14.4 causes Java processes to terminate unexpectedly, so Mac users who need to run Java will experience a delayed update.
The new issue affects all versions of Java since version 8, including current Early Access builds. According to Oracle, there is currently no workaround.
According to Oracle Senior Director of Product Management Aurelio Garcia-Ribeiro, this flaw was not noticed in beta versions prior to the 14.4 release. “Pre-compiled applications built with GraalVM Native Image should not be affected, but your ability to create new images may be affected,” he noted in a post warning of the vulnerability.
Oracle has notified its OpenJDK partners, customers, and Apple of the issue. Since there is no easy way to undo the macOS update, affected Apple Silicon Mac users who have already updated to version 14.4 will have to wait for a patch from Apple to resolve the issue.
If users have a cloned copy of a previous full system configuration, they can revert to it to continue using Java until a solution is found. This issue does not affect most typical Mac users since Java support for Mac was discontinued back in 2012.
This new report comes along with other unrelated issues found in the final version of macOS 14.4. The update caused some third-party hubs built into the monitor to stop working, and some printer drivers were removed or damaged.
