ESR's MagSafe Car Mount Charger comes in a fairly compact box that really isn't anything special. The kit includes a basic MagSafe charger, two mounts, a USB-C cable, cleaning wipes, and the usual setup and warranty literature.

Everything in the ESR Qi2 MagSafe car charger is plastic, fix the case from the halo and the body itself on both mounts. Despite the huge amount of plastic, the heavy materials make it durable.

We appreciate the presence of the vent and dash mount, with the latter having 3M double-sided tape pre-attached, ready to peel and stick. A 3-foot USB-C cable is included, even though it's pretty standard for chargers, but you'll need a USB-C port within reach for practical dashboard use, or your own charger cord that works in your car.

Each mount uses a ball-shaped mount known as a halo lock, which is inserted into the charger and tightened by turning a screw at the back. Additionally, the charging pad has multiple vents at the bottom that help dissipate heat while charging.

Two Halo Locks support 360-degree movement, allowing you to find the perfect position for quick access to maps or music. It also helps that the dash mount has a slight curve to make it more driver oriented.

The vent mount features a rigid clamp, rubber pads to prevent damage to the vent, and a foldable stand to support your phone at the perfect angle. The Halo Lock allows you to mount the ESR Qi2 car charger to horizontal or vertical air vents.

While installing a vent mount is convenient for those who don't want to attach anything to the dashboard or have the ability to move vehicles, we don't like the idea of a heater warming up our phones while they're charging in the winter. So, for our testing, we mostly used the dashboard mount.

3M tape is a solid gray double-sided tape that easily adheres to a variety of dashboard materials. We were able to clean the plastic dash, remove the sticker from the tape, and glue the mount directly to the dash.

The ESR charger mounts to the dash very securely and shows no signs of falling off during daily city driving, long highway trips, and even some snow storms. It keeps the iPhone away from the vent, but requires sticking something to the dash, and it can still get hot from the sun.

The charging pad uses Qi2 wireless charging with a maximum power of 15W, but only works with MagSafe-compatible iPhone 12 or later. It won't work with older devices or the entry-level Apple SE model, but most newer models can charge with an ESR charger.

15W charging won't provide much improvement in battery life unless you have a long commute. However, it will give you the extra power you need in a pinch or prevent your battery from draining quickly when using navigation apps.
