A new report highlights the unlikelihood of new hardware debuting at WWDC — and pushes aside rumors about the appearance of an update to the Apple TV set-top box.
Based on one of its own predictions, Bloomberg is now reporting that no new hardware will be announced at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, which starts June 10. The company also revised its forecast for the next version of Apple TV hardware.
The newsletter previously stated that the new version was expected to be available in the first half of 2024. It will include an updated A15 Bionic processor from the current model.
“There are no hardware announcements planned at WWDC unless Apple unexpectedly announces a new device that comes later,” the newsletter said. The predicted new Apple TV model is also no longer available.
Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, has suggested that Apple could add a camera built directly into the next Apple TV box. The potential new feature would facilitate FaceTime calls, as well as third-party video conferencing apps.
Currently, Apple TV uses a wireless connection to the iPhone’s rear cameras to take advantage of video conferencing.
Previously, there were reports of updates to the Mac Pro and Mac Studio lines sometime around 2025. Both of these pro-level Macs are expected to use the M4 Max or M4 Ultra chip, neither of which have yet been released.
When were the last Apple hardware updates?
It's been a while since the Apple TV was updated, and all of Apple's Mac laptops have been updated relatively recently.
- Apple TV: October 2022
- Mac mini: January 2023
- Mac Studio: June 2023
- Mac Pro: June 2023
- iMac: October 2023
- MacBook Pro: October 2023
- MacBook Air: March 2024
Apple has already said that it intends to update all of its Mac products to some version of the M4 chip in 2024 and 2025. Following the M4 chip in the iPad Pro, the lower-cost 14-inch MacBook Pro and 24-inch iMac are the next devices likely to be updated to M4 chips.
This is expected to happen towards the end of 2024. The higher-end MacBook Pro and Mac mini models are expected to be refreshed either in late 2024 or early 2025.
The next refresh of the MacBook Air line is expected in the spring or later in 2025. The Mac Studio and Mac Pro are rumored to be the last models to get the M4 update, in mid-2025 or later that year.
