WhatsApp update adds new text formatting options – here's how to use them

On Wednesday, WhatsApp released an update that brings new features to users. Specifically, WhatsApp is adding four new text formatting options to help people “organize and process their messages.” Read on and we'll explain in detail what these parameters are and how to use them.

How to use WhatsApp's new text formatting options

It's been a long time since WhatsApp users were able to format text using these options like bold, italic and monospace. Starting today, the app will also offer the following options: bulleted lists, numbered lists, block quotes, and inline code. These options complement the existing ones and can be used on iOS, Android, Mac and the web.

“These [text formatting options] save time and help people communicate more effectively through their messages, especially in group chats,” 9to5Mac told us.

Here's how to use WhatsApp's new text formatting options:

  • Bulleted lists: enter – character followed by a space.
  • Numbered lists: enter 1 or 2 digits, then a period and one space.
  • Block quotation mark: enter a > character and then a space.
  • Inline code: Wrap the text with a `

And if you had no idea about text formatting options in WhatsApp, here are the keyboard shortcuts to use the original ones:

  • Bold: Wrap text with *
  • Italic: Wrap text with _ character
  • Strikethrough: Wraps text with ~ character
  • Monospace: Wraps text with `` ` symbol

More new features coming coming soon

As for future updates, WhatsApp is also working on implementing passkey support in its iPhone app. Earlier this year, the app added the ability to allow channel administrators to send voice messages and create polls.

WhatsApp is available for free on the App Store. This requires an iPhone running iOS 12 or later. Be sure to update the app to get the latest features.
