Meta’s popular messaging app, WhatsApp, today announced a new transcription feature that’s designed to give you a transcript of a voice message you receive from a friend or family member.
WhatsApp says voice message transcriptions are for when you’re in a noisy place and can’t stop to listen to a traditional voice message. Transcriptions are created on the device, end-to-end encrypted, and are not transmitted to WhatsApp.
WhatsApp users can go to Settings > Chats > Voice Message Transcriptions to turn transcriptions on or off and choose their preferred transcription language. You can decrypt a voice message by long-pressing on it and tapping the “decrypt” option.
The voice message transcription feature has been available to WhatsApp beta testers for a few months now, but it is now ready to roll out to all users. WhatsApp says it will be available to users worldwide “in the coming weeks.” A few select languages will be available at first, including English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian, with more to come in the future.
