What's New in iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 7: Transparent Clock Widgets and Under-the-hood Improvements

iOS 18.1 beta 7 makes the Clock widget translucent instead of black and white.

iOS Beta 7 18.1 developer beta is out now and can now be installed on all compatible iPhone models. Here's everything you need to know about the release and the improvements it brings.

On Monday, Apple officially released iOS 18.1 developer beta 7 with build number 22B5075a. This follows the release of developer beta 6 a week earlier, which had build number 22B5069a.

The sixth developer beta gave users additional Control Center toggles and included certain visual improvements, such as new splash screens.

Apple Intelligence is undoubtedly the main focus of the iOS 18.1 update, as the company prepares for the feature's rumored October release. However, Monday's update simply builds on developer beta 6, making minor tweaks and quality-of-life improvements.

Clock widgets have a new translucent look in tinted mode

In beta 7, Apple made changes to the existing clock widgets found in iOS 18.1. In tinted mode, widgets now have a semi-transparent appearance, which has some similarities with visionOS.

Transparent UI elements with a distinct blur effect are common in iOS and have been present in the iPhone operating system for over a decade. Apple redesigned the iPhone operating system with iOS 7 in 2013, which introduced blur effects and a flat UI, replacing the skeuomorphic look used previously.

Since then, the company has continued to use translucent effects across its various operating systems, including iOS, iPadOS, and more. The redesigned clock widgets in Monday's beta may help achieve a more consistent look across the iOS interface, as they don't stand out as much as they did in previous iterations.

While the widgets have received a minor visual makeover, there don't appear to be any other changes affecting the look or functionality of the clock widgets in iOS 18.1.

Other improvements introduced in iOS 18.1 developer beta 7

Aside from the redesigned clock widgets, the seventh developer beta of iOS 18.1 doesn’t appear to bring any major changes. However, like developer beta 6, the update does include a few new splash screens for some system apps.

The splash screens can be seen when opening the Home, Podcasts, TV, and Voice Memos apps. These screens inform users of new features found in the respective apps, even if the features themselves were added in previous iOS 18 updates.

While Monday’s beta doesn’t add any significant features, the release likely includes various bug fixes and under-the-hood improvements that ultimately improve the operating system as a whole. This is to be expected as Apple prepares for the imminent public release of iOS 18.1.

Apple Intelligence features available for testing in iOS 18.1 beta

The seventh developer beta continues to support the same Apple Intelligence features as previous releases of iOS 18.1. Apple Intelligence is a set of new software features powered by Apple’s internal generative AI software.

Apple Intelligence can be used to edit text and images using generative AI.

With Apple Intelligence, users can edit text and images or summarize emails and notifications — all using artificial intelligence.

It's worth noting, however, that these features are only available on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, or the iPhone 16 series. Apple Intelligence can also be used on iPad and Mac computers with an M1 or later chip.

Image Playground and Visual Intelligence will appear in subsequent iOS 18 updates

Future releases of iOS 18 are expected to introduce support for Image Playground and Visual Intelligence, both of which are powered by Apple Intelligence. The iOS 18.2 update, rumored to arrive in December 2024, is when we might finally see the rollout of these two AI features.

The Image Playground app will allow users to create AI-generated images in specific Apple-approved styles. Visual Intelligence will allow users to learn about real-world objects and places using the iPhone camera and Apple Intelligence. The latter feature will be available on iPhone 16 devices that have a dedicated camera button to activate Visual Intelligence.
