This special case adds a USB-C port to AirPods with Lightning

Apple recently added a USB-C port to the entire AirPods lineup with the new AirPods 4 and AirPods Max. However, there are still many people who have older AirPods and just don't want to buy new headphones just for the sake of a new port. Luckily, someone has come up with a clever accessory that adds USB-C to Lightning-equipped AirPods.

USB-C Case for Older AirPods

Engineer Ken Pillonelli has designed a simple but brilliant accessory: a case for AirPods, which have a charging case with a Lightning port. But instead of just being a protective case, Pillonelli’s invention comes with a USB-C port so that owners of older AirPods can simply “upgrade” their charging case.

Basically, the case Pillonelli created has a built-in Lightning to USB-C adapter. All users have to do is place their original AirPods case into the USB-C case. Then, when you connect the USB-C cable to the protective case, it will transmit power to the AirPods case inside.

Apple sells a USB-C charging case for the second-generation AirPods Pro, so owners of the Lightning version can upgrade without buying new headphones. However, the case itself costs $99. Pillonel's solution costs about $40 and is available not only for the AirPods Pro 2, but also for the AirPods 1, 2, and 3 and the original AirPods Pro.

And what about AirPods Max owners? Well, if you don't want to buy the updated USB-C models (that's the only change in the new version), an engineer has also come up with a solution for Apple's earbuds. He created a small USB-C adapter that fits perfectly into the Lightning connector.

The AirPods Max adapter may not be the best-designed, but it’s discreet enough to go unnoticed most of the time.

The engineer shared a video showing the details of the accessory’s development, which you can watch below:

You can buy a USB-C case for your AirPods from Pillonel's online store. However, keep in mind that it will take some time for the product to arrive due to “high demand.”
