Next iPad mini update could include OLED, but given Apple's typical time between releases, it could be a few years away.
Apple just released the seventh-generation iPad mini, which uses an LED-backlit LCD screen. While there's no way to change the display technology for that model right now, the next update could see a switch to OLED.
In response to a post on X discussing the iPad mini, Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO Ross Young said late Wednesday that “the next iPad mini will have OLED.”

Beyond his six-word response, Young doesn’t go into detail about the claim. However, the suggestion could be true.
Young, and by extension DSCC, are pretty accurate when it comes to display-related rumors and analysis. Given the relatively limited detail in the post, as well as other previous rumors and reports, his response to the post is highly plausible.
A Fairly Safe Bet
Rumors have repeatedly suggested that an OLED iPad mini is in development and on the way. In 2023, there were rumors that a new iPad mini display and iPad Air screen using OLED would arrive in 2026.
By May 2024, it was reported that major display partner Samsung Display was working on a new display for the iPad Mini, again due out by 2026. Samples using OLED were allegedly sent to Apple in April for review, with mass production set to begin in late 2025.
Also supporting the “next iPad mini” claim is the fact that Apple’s model update release schedule isn’t exactly quick. There was a three-year gap between the seventh and sixth generations, 2.5 years between the sixth and fifth, and 3.5 years between the fifth and fourth.
A late 2026 release would reduce the gap between the current generation and the next model to just two years.
It’s possible that Apple will introduce a new iPad mini more frequently, especially after the latest spec update was the plan. Based on the last four generations, it seems unlikely that a much quicker refresh of Apple’s smallest tablet will happen before 2026.
