A new rumor claims the upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air will use the same displays as the current larger iPad Pro &mdash ; which could be good or bad news for buyers expecting a cheaper big screen.

Along with repeated and very strong rumors that a larger iPad Air would debut for the first time, there was speculation that it would be cheaper than the iPad Pro. The iPad Air has always been cheaper than the iPad Pro, but that's how it should be because otherwise it wouldn't have a reason to exist.

But now a new report from display analyst Ross Young says the 12.9-inch iPad Air will use the same display panels as the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Of course, there are other component differences between the models, but the screen makes up a significant portion of the cost.

Neither the price nor the positioning of the new iPad Air is clear. But given the new screen, it's unlikely that the 12.9-inch iPad Air will be priced significantly lower than the existing iPad Pro.

The good news is that the display will be literally as good as the one on the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but that will impact the cost even more. Existing users planning to upgrade to future new iPad Pro models will find their older models competing with the new iPad Air.

Yang says the reason for using this display is that there is unused stock of the screen made for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Although Apple hasn't confirmed that the iPad Air will be larger, regulatory filings have revealed that there will be four iPad models coming soon. These are believed to be the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Air and iPad Pro.

Young and his firm Display Supply Chain Consultants have a good track record of dealing with display supply chain rumors and stories, so it's likely that the on-screen news is true.
