The M4 MacBook Air is Coming in 2025, But You Don't Have to Wait for an Updated Model

Mark Gurman has been reporting for months that the M4 MacBook Air is coming in 2025, but you don't have to wait for the updated model. This is due to the recent refresh of the existing MacBook lineup, which is arguably more significant than the change in chip generation.

First off, there’s no big mystery about what to expect from the M4 MacBook Air in 2025. That’s because the M4 chip has been in machines since the latest iPad Pro, and it’s the same chip that powers the new iMac and some Mac mini models. Even more powerful versions of the M4 are found inside the MacBook Pro and some Mac mini models. We don’t expect the M4 in the 2025 MacBook Air to offer any surprises.

We also don’t expect the 2025 MacBook Air to feature a radically new design. The M4 MacBook Air will likely look the same as the M2 and M3 MacBook Airs. While we’d love to see iMac-inspired colors, we’ll likely get the same Midnight, Starburst, Silver, and Space Gray colors. If anything, Apple might swap out Space Gray for Space Black, like it did on the standard M4 MacBook Pro. We’ll see!

That's not to say the M4 MacBook Air won't be a better consumer laptop. Apple may even add a nano-texture display option, like the M4 iMac and MacBook Pro. But the M2 and M3 MacBook Air models have already received significant spec upgrades this year, making the current models a great value.

That's because Apple increased the RAM for current and previous-generation MacBook Air models from 8GB to 16GB over the base models, without raising the price! Apple Intelligence is probably to thank. Even a writer who occasionally has too many Safari tabs open can appreciate the doubling of RAM in ways that might not be noticeable for a year-over-year chip increase.

Apple is especially proactive in keeping the MacBook Air lineup up to date between chip cycles. Back when the M2 chip was still cutting-edge, Apple first released the all-new 15-inch MacBook Air.
