India's Tata Electronics reportedly buying 60 percent stake in Taiwan’s Pegatron’s only iPhone manufacturing plant in India, cementing Tata’s position as Apple’s top supplier partner in the country.
Pegatron and Tata Group have been in talks since at least April 2024. The plant, which employs about 10,000 people and helps make five million iPhones a year, would be Tata’s third iPhone manufacturing plant in India, Reuters reports.
Tata previously bought Wistron’s iPhone assembly plant in the southern state of Karnataka.
The new deal will reportedly see Tata take over day-to-day operations at the former Pegatron plant, with Pegatron providing technical support, according to sources. Pegatron, Tata Group, or Apple have yet to confirm the deal publicly.
However, the news was reportedly announced internally at Pegatron and Tata Group over the past few days. The two companies are now reportedly applying for approval of the deal from the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
The Chennai plant was Pegatron’s only facility in India. Apple has been expanding its manufacturing capacity outside China and Taiwan where possible amid rising regional tensions.
Tata Group is one of India’s largest manufacturing conglomerates and has become Apple’s top supplier in India over the past year. Tata also plans to build a second iPhone component plant in Hosur in Tamil Nadu.
The conglomerate’s existing plant there — again previously owned by Pegatron — was damaged by a devastating fire in October 2024 and will remain closed indefinitely until restoration is complete.
