Apple’s budget iPad and MacBook lines will be refreshed in early 2025, while the Mac Studio won’t get the M4 update until the summer, according to a report.

Apple is quickly phasing out the unwanted 3nm process used for the M3, updating all affected products in quick succession. While the Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro will get the M4 update by the end of October, the rest of the Mac lineup will get the update in 2025.

Apple is gearing up for a busy spring release cycle, according to a report from Bloomberg. The M4 MacBook Air is expected to begin production soon, with a release window in early 2025.

That leaves the Mac Studio and Mac Pro, which will likely be announced in the usual summer window between WWDC in June and mid-July. At that point, Apple will introduce the M4 Ultra for these high-end desktops.

The report says the Mac Studio is “delayed,” as Apple originally expected to release it alongside the MacBook Air refresh. However, Apple’s stated March-June desktop release schedule fits with its usual schedule, so it’s unclear why Apple pushed it out early or why it’s considered a delay.

A Busy Spring

The report goes on to say that spring will be full of products, including the long-awaited iPhone SE 4 and a refreshed eleventh-generation iPad. The iPad Air line could also get the M4 processor in a surprise annual chipset refresh — but that seems less likely.

Apple could surprise customers with an M4 iPad Air after the tablets refresh to the M2 in 2023, but it’s the same chipset used in the iPad Pro. And it’s unlikely that Apple will push it to the M3, although it could do so in May, so it seems odd that the iPad Air is included in the product launch rumors unless Apple changes its iPad strategy in a major way.

While Apple could push the announcements to early 2024 to space things out, the timing for the M4 MacBook Air and desktop Macs fits within Apple’s usual schedule. We’re rating this rumor as likely, but keep in mind that it’s still early enough that things could change by March.
