Source Claims iPhone 17 Pro Will Remain Titanium

While it was speculated that Apple would return to using aluminum for the iPhone 17 Pro, a new but unconfirmed claim suggests the company will continue to use titanium, if only for marketing reasons.

It was claimed that the iPhone 17 Pro models would ditch titanium, and specifically that they would return to an aluminum frame. It was also said that the back of the Pro models would combine glass and aluminum.

Now, tipster “Instant Digital” on Weibo insists that this is incorrect, and that the iPhone 17 Pro models will use titanium.

“Of course, the 17 Pro is still titanium,” he or she writes (in translation). “Why are you changing it to aluminum?”

“It’s impossible to think about,” the tipster continues. “Looking back at the iPhones of recent years, Apple has focused on promoting the high-quality frame materials of the Pro series as one of its selling points, from “surgical stainless steel” to “titanium.”

Instant Digital concludes by asking “how do you change it to aluminum?”

While Instant Digital doesn’t have the longest list of correct Apple leaks, he or she did correctly report the yellow iPhone 14. The leaker was also one of the few to correctly predict what is now known as the camera control button.

In this case, the leaker doesn’t cite any specific sources in the supply chain, and doesn’t actually back up the claim. Instead, it appears to be simply an opinion.

If that’s the case, that opinion is based solely on a marketing ploy that Apple will use. Instant Digital is right that Apple is heavily promoting titanium, but is absurdly wrong in assuming that Apple will have to hype any change.

Instead, if Apple ditched titanium, it would simply never mention it again. That’s what happened after it discovered in the early 2000s that the titanium it was promoting in the PowerBook G4 was prone to scratches.

The titanium case introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro had none of these issues and also allowed for new colors.

When the iPhone 17 lineup is announced in September 2025, it is now expected to include the iPhone 17 Slim.
