It's not so much popularity as it is release cycles, but Samsung has once again become the number one smartphone manufacturer in the world.

In September 2023, Apple ranked number one in the world in smartphone sales, and later analysis of the full year confirmed this position. Apple has seen similar success in certain regions, such as Europe.

However, according to the Korea Times, the roles have now changed. According to data for February 2024, the publication reports that Samsung captured 20% of the market share.

Apple gained 18% this month. That means Apple sold 17.41 million iPhones and Samsung sold 19.69 million units, spanning the entire lineup, with a retail price of just $80.

Neither Samsung nor Apple can boast of being number one. While it's not quite as if these two switched places on schedule, it's pretty close.

Thus, Apple took first place in September 2023 thanks to the launch of the iPhone 15 line. And Samsung's victory in February is explained by the fact that it was then that its latest Galaxy S24 models went on sale.

The Korea Times reports that Samsung has sold 6.53 million Galaxy S24 so far.

Then, according to January 2024 data, Samsung's share of the US market increased from 20% to 36%. At the same time, Apple's share in the post-holiday period, after the launch of the cycle, fell from 64% to 48%.

That Apple will hold the crown through 2023 may be more significant. Throughout the year, Samsung typically has an advantage over Apple because it sells many more different smartphone models at different price points.

However, in general, smartphone sales are trending downward around the world, especially in China. Apple still tops the charts in Japan as of the latest data through March 2024, but that market has shrunk.
