Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says a major camera system update will see the iPhone 18 Pro's wide-angle lens upgraded to include a variable aperture.
Rumors about the cameras in the upcoming iPhone 17 and later models have previously ranged from claims that they will get improved bokeh to the front-facing camera doubling in resolution to 24MP. Now, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims to have concrete information that the iPhone 18 Pro will get this variable aperture upgrade.
In a blog post that he says is based on his own industry sources, Kuo says that this upgrade will “significantly improve the user experience in photography.”
That’s not an exaggeration, as it means that the iPhone camera will be able to adjust to the current lighting conditions. So before the photo is taken and before any computational photography calculations are applied, the camera will control the amount of light reaching its sensor.
In addition, a variable aperture lens should improve focus and depth of field. This will also give photographers more options for creating a bokeh effect or sharp focus.
iPhone 18 Rumors
Separately, the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to use a 2nm processor. In September 2024, Kuo said that due to the cost of 2nm processors, they could be limited, perhaps even to the point that they would only be in the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
This processor is expected to be called the A20, and there have been claims that it will include a revised version of what is called chip packaging. Instead of the current system of putting everything – such as cores and RAM – on a single chip, Apple may split it into multiple elements.
This has no benefit for the end user. This could improve Apple’s ability to reduce the number of motherboard variants it needs to make and add RAM modules with different densities if it deems it necessary to meet demand.
Another feature that may now wait until the iPhone 18 Pro is under-screen Face ID. Whenever it arrives, it would eliminate the need for the notch that first appeared on the iPhone X in 2017.
