Pixelmator Pro updates image editing with AI masking tools

Notice how the right side of the image has been removed using the new masking tools

The new Pixelmator Pro 3.6 update for Mac focuses on masking, a key way of selecting objects for editing or deletion, which is now accelerated by artificial intelligence.

The legacy Mac image editor Pixelmator Pro gets major updates several times a year, but this newest version is an updated version of the tool at the heart of the app. While there are many ways to select a portion of an image to work with, the quickest way is to use the masking feature in the app — but sometimes it can be difficult to get the result right.

Selecting the Quick Selection tool and dragging around the image still selects parts of the image, but a set of masking tools also appears on the screen. With their help, users can quickly customize what has been selected.

Drag and drop to select parts of an image is perhaps the most common use of masking, but the new AI-powered feature also improves on the existing background removal tool. In the previous version this might not be quite right, so much so that you sometimes had to manually click point by point around an object to select it.

Removing the background creates a mask for all elements that the user does not need. Now, thanks to updated tools, once Pixelmator Pro accurately guesses what's in the foreground, users can refine those selections.

In addition to selecting an element of a photo to work with, such as removing an object from the background, masks can also be used to create layering effects.

A new masking toolbar appears on screen when needed

In Pixelmator Pro 3.6, a new vector masks feature allows users to drag a square, circle, or slightly more complex shapes over Images. Users can create their own mask shapes and they are all customizable.

In practice, all this has led to the fact that the selection of objects has become faster and more accurate.

Pixelmator Pro 3.6 is a free update for existing users. The app is a one-time purchase and costs $49 on the Mac App Store.
