Apple has released new firmware for older AirPods models, but there is no information about what is contained in the update.
Tuesday's firmware update increases the build number to 6F21, up from the previous version, which was 6A326. It's only compatible with the original AirPods Pro, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and the version of the AirPods Max with a Lightning connector.
While the exact contents of the firmware update are unclear, the software likely includes various bug fixes and quality of life improvements rather than new features, as the update is intended for older hardware.
The new firmware is installed automatically for users when the AirPods are connected to the charging case and paired with an iOS device. There is no manual installation method for this firmware update.
The AirPods Pro 2 will also get a new Hearing Assist feature that was announced by Apple in June and approved by the FDA in September 2024. The feature is aimed at helping users with mild to moderate hearing loss.
Settings for this feature have already appeared in the developer betas of iOS 18.1. Hearing support is expected to launch with firmware version 7B19, which has not yet been released for AirPods Pro 2.
Apple released a new software beta for AirPods Pro 2 on October 15 without hearing health features, although some media outlets had already announced the update. Older AirPods models updated on Tuesday will not receive hearing health features.
