Mirroring Your iPhone Could Reveal Your Personal App Use to Your Boss

iPhone Mirroring

The iPhone Mirroring feature in macOS Sequoia and iOS 18 poses a security risk to enterprise users because it could expose personal iPhone apps to the company's IT department.

The addition of iPhone Mirroring to macOS Sequoia allows users to see and interact with their iPhone’s display through their Mac. While this makes it easier to use an iPhone without having to hold it, it can be problematic when using a personal iPhone with a corporate Mac.

According to Sevco Security, there is a bug that could allow corporate IT to expose an employee’s personal iPhone. The IT department may be aware of apps installed on the employee’s personal iPhone.

Sevco found that personal iOS apps were being reported as installed on Mac devices. The problem is that IT may see apps that may be banned on corporate devices as “installed” on a company-managed Mac or MacBook, when in fact they are only installed on the user’s own iPhone.

In addition to games and other entertainment apps, this could also expose the installation of other potentially dangerous apps. For example, a VPN in a country that heavily restricts internet access, or a dating app that reveals a user’s sexual orientation in a repressive country.

Concerned that this could pose a privacy risk and potentially violate privacy laws in some jurisdictions, Sevco has notified Apple of the issue and potential fixes. Sevco has also informed a number of enterprise software vendors that have common customers with the security service, confirming that the issue is not isolated.

Based on conversations with Apple, Sevco expects a fix to become available in the future.

While a fix is on the way, it is recommended that employees avoid using iPhone Mirroring with their personal iPhones on work computers. Companies should also warn employees about the current use of iPhone Mirroring and identify any IT systems that collect software inventory from Macs that may be affected.
