Microsoft is finally allowing users to sign into accounts using access keys

Microsoft Password Support

Microsoft has rolled out access key support for all consumer accounts, allowing users to sign in to services without using a password.

The popularity of passwords in services is gradually growing as they offer a secure way to authenticate the user. Already a supporter of the passkey standard, Microsoft is now making it available to all Microsoft consumer accounts.

The change made on May 2 means that users can add an access key to their Microsoft account. Once enabled, users will be able to sign into Microsoft accounts through an iPhone or other mobile device, taking advantage of that device's biometric security.

Facial recognition with Face ID and fingerprint recognition with Touch ID are supported, as well as security keys and PIN codes. After authentication on the mobile device, the account becomes available.

Access keys can be used to sign in to Microsoft apps and websites, including Microsoft 365 and Copilot, on desktop and mobile browsers. Passkey support for mobile apps is expected in the coming weeks.

Microsoft's wider adoption follows the adoption of passkeys by many other technology companies.

In addition to Apple, companies such as Paypal and Google have supported passkeys for over a year. X added it to the mobile app on April 9th.
