Little-used Google One VPN is shutting down

VPN from Google One

Google will shut down its subscription-based Google One VPN service later in 2024, this feature is shipping in Google's graveyard due to its customers not using it enough.

Google One is the search giant's cloud storage service, allowing users to expand their online storage capacity, along with a number of additional features. As part of the service update, the VPN element will be removed.

In an email to subscribers seen by Android Authority, Google explains a number of changes it will make on May 15th. In addition to opening up Google Photos' AI-powered features to more users, the company is also looking to phase out two perks.

In addition to ending free shipping on print orders from Google Photos on May 15, access to VPN from Google One will also be limited later in 2024. Existing users will be offered alternative services and other subscription features will continue to function as normal.

The change mainly affects service subscribers who do not use Google equipment. The company says Pixel users will still be able to access Google's VPN using a Pixel 7 or later device through the device settings.

This change will also not affect Google Fi users, as the service still offers users access to a VPN.

Google explained to 9to5Google that the VPN was being discontinued because it found that “people just weren't using it.” He adds that eliminating this feature will allow the team to refocus on more in-demand elements of Google One.

In March 2023, Google expanded VPN access to all Google One subscribers, including iPhone and Android users.
