The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models appear to be the most affected by this bug.

iPhone 16 device owners, especially those buying the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, are saying that the devices freeze and then reboot seemingly at random.
Multiple reports on Apple support communities, as well as on Reddit and other forums online, suggest that an unknown number of iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models are experiencing issues out of the box. In each case, the iPhone suddenly becomes extremely slow or completely unresponsive to input, then abruptly reboots.
Some reports say that affected iPhones may also restart after a standby crash, causing the home screen to appear when woken up rather than where the user left off. The recent update to iOS 18.0.1 does not appear to fix the issue, with reports suggesting that the freeze/crash cycle can occur up to 20 times per day, according to a report from MacRumors.
Even owners who have returned their iPhone 16 models have reported the issue on the replacement iPhone as well. One user reported that restoring their iPhone 16 from a backup on their Mac, rather than iCloud, fixed the issue.
Users say that taking the devices to Apple stores for diagnostics typically results in a simple software reinstall, which reportedly doesn’t fix the issue. However, some users claim that performing a full erase and reinstall seems to have worked.
Apple hasn’t commented on the issue, with some users speculating that an iCloud sync issue may be the cause. If true, that suggests Apple could fix the issue with a future iOS update.
It’s unclear how big the issue is, and it’s far from affecting all users.
Separately, while the iPhone 16 lineup as a whole has seen weak sales — outside of China — the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro versions once again represent the majority of iPhones purchased.
