iPad and Mac don't compete with each other, so buy both, says Apple executive

After reviews that talk about the limitations of iPadOS This means the new iPad Pro can't easily replace the MacBook Pro; Apple insists the two devices complement each other.

In other words, buy both. The issue that iPadOS doesn't seem to be as efficient as the iPad Air and iPad Pro hardware has been raised throughout reviews of the new version.

However, Joanna Stern from the Wall Street Journal managed to put pressure on the Apple executive about how inconvenient the iPad Pro with iPadOS is. And while the new iPad Pro could outperform the MacBook Pro in certain circumstances, she says it can't be anyone's only computing device.

“We don't see them as competing devices. We see them as complementary devices,” Tom Boger, Apple's vice president of iPad and Mac product marketing, told her.

In particular, Boger says that Apple believes the iPad has “always been a touch device.” In contrast, the Mac in all its forms is designed for what he called “indirect manipulation”, that is, using accessories such as the keyboard and trackpad.

Stern asked Boger about whether Apple would ever change its mind about touchscreen Macs in some form.

“Oh, I can’t say we’ll never change our minds,” he replied. Rumors about a Mac with a touchscreen have been around for years.

Boger will not delay any further, and he will not be pressured by rumors about 2022 — rather wishful thinking — that Apple intended to bring macOS to the M2-powered iPad.
