by Hartley Charlton

Apple plans to introduce automatic notification summarization as part of a series of new artificial intelligence features in iOS 18, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In today's Power On newsletter, Gurman went into more detail about what to expect from Apple's first big foray into generative AI at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference:

As part of the changes, the company will improve Siri's voice capabilities, giving it a more conversational feel, and adding features to help users in their daily lives. an approach it calls “proactive intelligence.”

It includes services such as automatically summarizing notifications from your iPhone, quickly reviewing news articles, and transcribing voice memos, as well as improving existing features that automatically fill your calendar and suggest applications. There will also be some photo enhancements in the form of AI-powered editing, but none of these features will impress people who have used AI in Adobe Inc.'s apps. over the past few months.

Gurman added that while Apple will primarily rely on on-device processing to support its artificial intelligence features, it will also deliver them via the cloud in data centers , which contain high-performance silicon chips from Apple designed for the Mac. He also noted that a chatbot like ChatGPT will be noticeably absent from Apple's future AI features. Apple executives are said to have admitted that they are “playing catch-up” internally.

Apple's first foray into artificial intelligence is expected to be revealed as part of a preview of next-generation software updates at WWDC, which begins June 10.
