iOS 17.3 introduces AirPlay for hotel TV with delay for iPhone

Remember the feature Apple promised in iOS 17 to use AirPlay from an iPhone directly to a hotel TV? Yes, it snuck into the iOS 17.3 release cycle, fulfilling the list of features announced at WWDC 2023 last June.

As per iOS 17.3 RC release notes :

AirPlay support in hotels allows you to stream content directly to your in-room TV in some hotels.

Like this one features, we may have to wait a while before we can name specific hotel locations that support AirPlay for hotel room TVs. In fact, iOS features that require hardware support, such as CarPlay, GymKit and HomeKit, take longer to implement.

However, Apple has previously said that hotel brands from IHG Hotels & Resorts will be the first to support hotel AirPlay. Separately, LG has named its Pro:Centric Smart hotel TVs as equipment that will work with hotel AirPlay.

Here's how LG described how the feature works:

LG Electronics and Apple have worked together to make using AirPlay as easy as it is at home. Guests will be able to securely connect their iPhone or iPad to the LG Smart Hotel TV by simply scanning a unique QR code. There is no need to remember logins and passwords, or download a separate application. This will be the easiest way for a hotel to give guests access to their personal entertainment apps and accounts on the big in-room screen.

We'll keep you updated as the implementation progresses.
