India's iPhone exports rise to $6 billion in six months

Mumbai, India

The number of iPhones made in India rose by a third in the six months to the end of September 2024, as Apple's expansion efforts in the country continue.

Apple is working to reduce its reliance on one country, even as China urges the company to continue investing in its factories. Despite expanding in Vietnam, the main beneficiary of Apple's move has been India, with the country saying it is its fastest-growing firm there in 50 years.

According to Bloomberg, unspecified sources in India say the country exported nearly $6 billion worth of iPhones in the six months to September 2024. Foxconn accounted for about half of that, with Pegatron and Tata Group accounting for the rest.

Tata Group is India's first iPhone assembler after buying a plant from Wistron in 2023. Its exports in the six months to September totaled about $1.7 billion worth of iPhones.

These figures are reportedly what's called the estimated factory gate value. It doesn't include other costs like taxes or shipping, which are then added to the retail price.

Based on factory value alone, India's total exports are expected to exceed $10 billion in fiscal 2024.

Separately, in January 2023, India's Commerce Minister said Apple eventually intends to make a quarter of all its iPhones in the country.
