China's top market research company has published its latest data, and as the iPhone 16 draws closer, the iPhone 15 continues its recovery in the country.

The China Academy of Information and Communications (CAICT) is a research firm with close ties to the Chinese government. Once a month it publishes data on smartphone sales in the country.

The latest data refers to April. CAICT reports that foreign brand phones in China — basically it's an iPhone — in April increased by 52% year-over-year, from 2.3 million sales in April 2023 to 3.5 million in April 2024.

It's been a mixed year for Apple in China, according to a Tuesday report from Reuters. In January and February 2024, iPhone sales fell by about 37%. Sales rose 12% in March.

This increase will likely be accompanied by a decline in profitability for Apple and other companies. iPhones have seen significant discounts in China over the past few months.

Apple CEO Tim Cook remains bullish on the company's prospects in the country.

“I'm very pleased that, in an extremely competitive environment, we increased iPhone sales in mainland China last quarter,” Cook said in Apple's latest earnings report. “This may come as a surprise to some. And so I feel good about China and think more about the long term than the next week or so.”

The best-selling Apple models in Chinese cities are the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

China accounts for 17% to 20% of Apple's iPhone sales each quarter. This figure varies depending on the data source.
