Carol Surface joined Apple in early 2023 as its new chief people officer, but she is set to leave the role after less than two years on the job.

The chief people officer position was created by combining the HR department, which originally reported to Deirdre O'Brien, and forming a separate unit. O'Brien had been senior vice president of people and retail since 2019 before the roles were split.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Carol Surface is leaving Apple, and Deirdre O'Brien will once again assume the chief people officer role. The reason for the quick job change is unknown.

Apple has seen several significant executive departures in recent years as longtime employees reach retirement age. CFO Luca Maestri is set to leave at the end of 2024, and Dan Riccio is set to retire soon.

Retiring after more than 20 years at Apple is one thing, leaving in 20 months is quite another. Apple may have realized it doesn't need the job, or Surface may have left for better opportunities — there's no way to know without an official statement.
